Issue Position: Uphold Constitutional Rights

Issue Position

I took an oath as a State Senator to defend and uphold the constitution of the United States and the constitution of the State of Alaska. Article I, Section 1 of our state constitution states, "all persons have a natural right to life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness, and the enjoyment of the rewards of their own industry." The most important of these is the right to life, because if this right is not sacred, all other enumerated rights are meaningless. Being pro-life is at the very center of my understanding of constitutional rights.
Another right that cannot be taken for granted is the right to keep and bear arms. In addition to the federal Second Amendment, our state constitution provides -- "The individual right to keep and bear arms shall not be denied or infringed by the State or a political subdivision of the State" (Article I, Section 19). I have supported every bill introduced in the legislature that sought to further safeguard our right to keep and bear arms. I am proud to be a member of the National Rifle Association (Life Member), Gun Owners of America, and the Second Amendment Foundation.
Upholding and defending the constitutional rights of every Alaskan should always be the core responsibility for all public servants. With me, your constitutional rights are simply not negotiable. Never have been. Never will be.
